1. Why wellness needs a different visual register.
Hotel-template-based wellness sites fail at a specific moment: when the prospective guest pictures themselves arriving. A wellness retreat is an act of self-investment that costs €1,500-€6,000. The buyer needs to feel the calm before they sign the deposit invoice.
Cinematic web carries the calm: slow-motion footage of natural environments, generous whitespace, slow scroll rhythm, editorial typography in display serifs, color palettes pulled from the property (sand, stone, sage, pine). The opposite — pushy CTAs, busy carousels, slider plugins, accordion treatment lists — is a tonal mismatch that signals "this isn't a calm experience" before the guest even leaves home.
The visual register of the website becomes part of the wellness product. Cluttered web is the digital equivalent of a noisy lobby — fatal for premium positioning.Tim Pantoudis · AEN Media
2. Audience profile.
| Resort type | Audience | Typical ADR | Retreat AOV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpine wellness (Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland) | DACH primary, UK secondary, age 45-65 | €300-€700 | €2,500-€6,000 |
| Coastal Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Spain) | EN+DE+FR, age 35-55, women-majority | €250-€500 | €1,800-€4,500 |
| Thermal spa (Hungary, Slovenia, Czech) | DACH+CZ+HU domestic, medical-tourism | €150-€350 | €1,200-€3,000 |
| Urban day-spa | Local + business travelers | n/a (per-treatment €60-€280) | n/a |
| Eco-retreat / nature | EN+DE+NL, age 30-50, sustainability-oriented | €200-€450 | €1,500-€4,000 |
3. Treatment booking vs retreat-package booking.
Two fundamentally different UX flows that must both be supported:
Treatment booking (transactional)
- Single service, €60-€280 typical price
- Real-time calendar with therapist assignment
- Same-day or 24h advance booking common
- Payment can be deferred to arrival
- Mobile-first UX — guest is often booking while traveling
- Cancellation rules: 24h notice typically free, after that 50-100% charge
Retreat-package booking (consultative)
- Multi-day curated package, €1,500-€6,000 typical
- Cohort-based scheduling (specific retreat dates 4-12 times/year)
- Requires consultation call before deposit (especially for health-focused retreats)
- 30-50% deposit at booking, remainder 14 days before arrival
- Detailed health/dietary intake form required
- Cancellation rules: tiered (90+ days free, 60-90 days 25%, 30-60 days 50%, <30 days 100%)
Website architecture: separate URL paths — /treatments/ for transactional, /retreats/ for consultative — with different conversion flows. Trying to handle both in one form/CTA is the #1 mistake we see in wellness website audits.
4. Booking software.
| Platform | Best for | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Mindbody | Mid-sized spas, classes/yoga integration | €100-€250/month |
| SpaSoft | Hotel-integrated premium spas (Aman, Four Seasons) | Custom enterprise pricing |
| Booker (Mindbody-owned) | Mid-market salon/spa | €80-€200/month |
| Treatwell | European salon-first, individual treatments | Commission-based |
| Phorest | Ireland-based, salon/spa SMB | €80-€180/month |
AEN integrates with all via official APIs. Selection criteria: resort size, hotel-PMS integration needs (Opera, Mews), existing treatment-staff workflows, multilingual support requirements.
5. Multilingual setup.
| Region | Required | Strongly recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Alpine (AT/CH/DE) | DE + EN | IT, FR |
| Greek coastal/thermal | EL + EN + DE | RU, IL |
| Italian coastal | IT + EN + DE | FR, RU |
| Spanish/Portuguese coastal | ES + EN + DE | FR, NL |
| Eastern European thermal (CZ/HU/SK) | Local + EN + DE | RU |
German is the #1 non-English required language across virtually all Mediterranean and alpine wellness destinations — DACH guests dominate the boutique wellness market in Europe.
6. GDPR Art. 9 — health-data sensitivity.
Wellness intake forms collect health-category data: allergies, medical conditions, medications, pregnancy status, mental-health context (for retreats with therapy components). Under GDPR Article 9, this is special-category data with elevated handling requirements:
- Explicit consent required (not implied or opt-out)
- Data minimization — only collect what is necessary for safe treatment
- Encrypted storage — at rest and in transit
- Defined retention — typically 3 years post-last-visit, then deletion
- Processor agreements with all tech vendors handling the data
- Right to deletion properly implementable
Practical implementation: intake form is delivered via secure portal (not regular email or web form), separate explicit-consent checkbox for health-data, automated deletion workflows.
7. Retreat-package tax positioning.
Greek VAT rates 2026:
- Accommodation overnight: 13%
- Spa treatments: 24%
- Restaurant meals: 13%
- In-room meals: 24%
- Wellness consultations (with licensed practitioner): 13%
For retreat packages bundling all of the above, the effective VAT rate depends on the breakdown. A €3,000 retreat structured as:
- 70% accommodation + 15% treatments + 15% meals = effective ~16%
- 40% accommodation + 40% treatments + 20% meals = effective ~19%
- 60% accommodation + 20% treatments + 20% meals = effective ~17%
This €30-€90 per booking can compound to €3,000-€10,000/year for a busy retreat operation. Disclaimer: real-world tax positioning requires advisor consultation for individual cases — these are illustrative ranges only.
8. Schema.org markup.
| Schema type | Use case |
|---|---|
| DaySpa or HealthAndBeautyBusiness | Base type |
| LodgingBusiness | If hotel-integrated |
| Service (array) | Per treatment with duration, price, provider |
| Offer | Retreat packages |
| Person | Therapists with credentials, languages |
| Event | Workshops, group classes, retreat dates |
| MedicalProcedure | If medical-grade treatments offered (IV drips, laser, fillers) |
| FAQPage | Per treatment + per retreat |
| AggregateRating | 5+ verified reviews |
9. Investment & ROI.
| Package | Cost | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Combo (Website + AI Agent) | €7,500 net | ~21 days |
| + Treatment-booking integration (Mindbody/SpaSoft/Booker) | +€1,500-€3,000 | +7-10 days |
| + Retreat-package CMS + cohort scheduling | +€1,500-€2,500 | +7-10 days |
| Full package | €10,500-€13,000 | 35-45 days |
ROI: 1-2 additional retreat bookings per cohort × €3,000-€6,000 AOV = payback within first 1-2 cohorts. Treatment booking conversions typically lift 30-50% from cleaner direct flow vs OTA-routed traffic.
